From the editor

She won’t return my phone calls. She won’t even acknowledge my email attempts anymore. After being asked to write a personalized letter to Chuck Berry requesting an interview, along with sending several issues of our publications and the interview questions for his approval, Berry’s people have cut all ties with my people. Did I move too fast? Was I too demanding? I didn’t even bring up his armed robberies. Oh well. This whole issue has worked that way, one difficulty after another.
In case you haven’t ever read one of these notes from the editor before, they’re usually written in one of two equally obnoxious and annoying ways. 1. Name-dropping everything deemed hip and cool — putting names and bands in bold text so everyone will notice how in the know you are or 2. Writing out in sentence form everything that’s listed in the table of contents. It’s really all quite ridiculous. I instead place my trust in you, the collegiate reader, to turn the pages and deduce for yourself everything that you need to know to have an awesome weekend. Rock.
Chris Thile and Mike Marshall
Live Duets
Sugar Hill
Gently coming through the right speaker like an open breeze on a cloudless day, mandolin extraordinaire and one-third of the Grammy-winning bluegrass outfit Nickel Creek, Chris Thile performs with ingenious improvisation that pushes the boundaries of sound previously associated with his small, acoustic instrument.
On the left speaker, Mike Marshall, 20 years his elder, effortlessly plucks and picks his way through delicate compositions that evoke more to the senses than that of sound alone. Together the virtuosos create magnificent compositions and, judging from the quality of these live recordings, their performance at Cactus Café on Saturday night should not be missed.
