Album of the week

Deadboy and The Elephantmen
We Are Night Sky
Fat Possum Records
Dax Riggs was a Jehovah’s witness until the age of 10 when he watched the HBO special “The Elephant Man” and lost his faith in God. The result of this episode can be heard on the debut album from Deadboy and The Elephantmen, Riggs’ first venture away from his cult-favorite metal band, Acid Bath. We Are Night Sky is 12 culling songs divided equally between swamp-style blues with searing and distorted electric guitar rhythms and depressingly dark acoustic numbers that are accentuated through sparse instrumentation and the soft texture of drummer Tessie Brunet’s vocal harmonies. The subject matter is always death, but it’s never sounded this appealing. The duo will be performing in Austin for SXSW.
Tribute band of the week
2/16 Dead Skin Mask @ The Back Room
While Slayer is hard at work recording the follow-up to 2001’s collossal release, God Hates Us All, this tribute band will Reign in Blood over all things South of Heaven at The Back Room, including local openers Blessed Agony and Slab Trash.
