'History Boys' proves to be the boss

"The History Boys,” an original British play by Alan Bennett, won six Tony Awards during Sunday’s ceremony at New York’s Radio City Music Hall. “Boys” won the award for best play, along with others including best director and best actor. The 60th annual ceremony included on celebrity presenters such as Oprah and Julia Roberts.

On Letterman before a Daydream Nation

Sonic Youth — who launched their new album, Rather Ripped, and a new tour Tuesday — will perform on CBS’s “The Late Show With David Letterman” Friday. It has been two years since the band released a new record.

 

‘Pimp’ comes to San Fernando Valley

MTV’s “Pimp My Ride” begins its fourth season tonight. The popular auto customization series is joining forces with Galpin Motors, a Ford Dealership from the San Fernando Valley. For the past 16 years, Galpin has been the world’s highest-selling Ford dealer, and it has been customizing cars since the 1960s. Producers were seeking fresh ideas for the new season and left behind the show’s previous shop, West Coast Customs.

‘Closer’ breaks record for viewers

TNT’s cop show “The Closer” drew in a record-breaking 8.3 million cable viewers when it premiered its second season Monday night. The series, starring Kyra Sedgwick, became the top-scripted series telecast ever in basic cable, according to Nielsen Media Research. With 7.4 million viewers, USA network’s sci-fi mystery “The 4400” was the previous record holder.

New Album for Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan’s new album, Modern Times, will be released on Aug. 29. The record, the singer’s 44th album, was produced by Dylan himself. Track titles include “Ain’t Talkin,” “Thunder on the Mountain” and “Workingman’s Blues.”

 Korn cancels European Tour

Korn frontman Jonathan Davis said he has been diagnosed with the blood disorder immune thrombocytopenic purpura, after noticing bruises on his body. Davis dropped out of a performance at England’s Download Festival, and the band was forced to cancel their European tour after doctors instructed Davis not to perform for several weeks.

Dang, Santana Again?

At the annual Opening Night at the Bowl on June 23, Carlos Santana will be inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame. Santana has been a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame since 1998. Other performers to be inducted include pianist Andre Watts and the Blue Man Group.

No bassist for Panic!?

Alleging in a public statement to MTV that former bass player Brent Wilson lacked responsibility and musical progression with the band, Panic! At The Disco is in a dispute with the ex-band member over last month’s decision to replace the bassist. Wilson stated that there had been no previous discussions of anyone leaving the band.

Eminem will follow-up 2002’s blockbuster “8 Mile,” his motion picture debut, by taking on the starring role of a bounty hunter in the movie remake of the CBS drama “Have Gun — Will Travel.”

‘Cars’ stalled in wake of ‘Ice Age’

The animated family movie “Cars” from Disney-Pixar topped the box office this past weekend, raking in nearly $63 million. Although not out-doing Fox’s “Ice Age: The Meltdown,” which was released in March and brought in $68 million its opening weekend, “Cars” is ranked fifth in the list of most lucrative opening weekends for animated films.
